The finding emerged in an evaluation of the three-year Toybox project,run by early years organisation Nippa and Save the Children.
During weekly sessions, seven part-time outreach playworkers,co-ordinated by a project worker, worked with children in their homesand helped to increase parents' understanding of the importance of playand stimulation in children's early years.
The project has received funding, so it can continue for two more years.Organisers are pushing for it to be mainstreamed.
Siobhan Fitzpatrick, chief executive of Nippa, credited the project'ssuccess with building mutual trust in Traveller families and pre-schoolteachers.
