Playwork qualifications officially recognised in Northern Ireland

1 min read Early Years Play
Playwork has been recognised as a distinct profession within the children's workforce in Northern Ireland, after the government officially endorsed playwork qualifications.

The publication of new minimum standards for daycare and childminding for children aged under 12 sets out the type and level of qualifications staff are expected to attain.

Playwork qualifications are highlighted in the standards for out-of-school settings and recognised as equivalent to early years qualifications.

The move comes after a campaign by play professionals, sector skills council for play Skills Active and Playboard, an organisation promoting children’s play in Northern Ireland.

Jacquline O’Loughlin, chief executive of Playboard, said: “We can’t underestimate the significance of this development, it is absolutely brilliant news for the Playwork sector.

“The standards set out the requirements for registration and inspection of childcare providers and ensure that all children, parents and providers have a clear understanding of the minimum standard of care they can expect to receive and provide.
