The forthcoming children's workforce strategy from the Department for Children, Schools and Families is set to include the development of playwork qualifications. Sarah Cooper finds out what's happening across the UK.

ENGLAND

There are a range of playwork qualifications at NVQ Levels 2, 3 and 4, as well as several sector-endorsed degrees. Qualifications can be studied for in various ways, such as taught courses, work-based assessment, distance and residential learning. The development of the Qualifications and Credit Framework and associated Integrated Qualifications Framework will allow potential learners to move more easily across professions - from playwork to youth work for example - and provide more clarity for employers. It is hoped the publication of the strategy will see a strengthened commitment to qualifying playworkers at Level 3 and a drive to establish a graduate workforce.
