Northern Ireland: Speech centre will help pre-schoolers

An early years centre for children with speech and language difficulties has been given the go-ahead by Northern Ireland's Department for Education.

The centre, due to open in September, will be based at Gibson Primary School in Omagh, and will provide therapy and education for 20 pre-school children with speech and language impairments.

It will also offer outreach services to other schools in the area. The school already has a speech and language unit for primary school children.

The news follows a joint proposal put together by Northern Ireland's Western Education and Library Board and the Western Health and Social Services Board.

It will be run by speech and language charity I-Can, which has been charged with establishing specialist early intervention services in the area covered by the boards.
