Northern Ireland: Schools join green transport scheme

Some 6,500 primary school children in Northern Ireland are to take part in a green transport scheme.

The Best Foot Forward For Schools programme aims to educate children andtheir parents about greener ways of travelling to and from school.

More than 100 schools have signed up to the scheme, which is run by theDepartment for Regional Development's Travelwise NI initiative.

Pupils are given lessons on how measures like car-sharing, cycling andwalking can help the environment. The children then get homeworkdesigned to involve their parents and encourage them to look at greenerways of travelling.

Stephen Hewitt, schools co-ordinator at Travelwise NI, said: "Theresponse from head teachers has shown that they are willing to play avital role in helping to change attitudes towards how we travel."
