Northern Ireland: Minister finds cash to save school clubs

Northern Ireland's children's minister has found the 500,000 needed to save scores of out-of-school clubs from closure.

In an announcement last week, Lord Jeff Rooker delivered on the promisehe made in August, less than a week in to the job (Children Now, 17-30August). It is estimated that the extra money will keep open at least 40voluntary out-of-school clubs, a sixth of the province's total.

Rooker said: "I promised that I would take steps to address the fundingsituation for out-of-school-hours clubs. As a result of productivediscussions with PlayBoard, which placed the short-fall in the region of500,000. I am glad to announce that I have secured the necessaryfunding to resolve the immediate problem faced by many clubs."

He added that it was important to develop a more joined-up approach toearly years provision and that three different departments were workingtogether to shape future policy.
