Northern Ireland: Funding still won't help school clubs

New early years funding announced by the Northern Ireland Executive will have little or no impact on a huge cash shortfall threatening scores of out-of-school clubs, according to play campaigners.

The extra 1.2m aims to fill the gap when funding from the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation ends.

But it will only cover childcare schemes already claiming cash under priority two of the programme's five main priorities.

This means it will not help most out-of-school clubs, many of which get funding from priority one, aimed at projects that help parents into work, claimed PlayBoard, which last month warned that at least 40 out-of-school clubs could close (Children Now, 11-17 May).

"The situation is absolutely dire at the moment," said regional manager Jacqueline O'Loughlin.
