Non-state settings lack voice in forums

1 min read Early Years
The representation of non-state early years settings on schools forums is still a "very mixed picture" despite government expectations, the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) has claimed.

Government guidelines issued in July said forums that already have non-school members needed to get a representative from a private, voluntary and independent (PVI) sector in place by the end of last month.

But while many local authorities appear to be meeting these targets, the NDNA's chief executive Purnima Tanuku told CYP Now PVI providers are still under-represented. However, she said local authorities were not entirely to blame.

"Many nurseries may not fully understand the importance of representation on schools forums. A recent survey by NDNA showed 49 per cent of respondents didn't know whether they are represented," she said. "All local authorities in England are required to have this representation by 2009/10, so it is important those that do not have it start now."
