Nishant Mittal, 17, Newham, east London

I started volunteering about seven months ago through Newham Volunteers, which is a volunteering programme in my borough open to anyone aged 16 and above. First off, I helped out at some local events, like at Halloween -- it was really fun.

They then needed volunteers at Newham Cricket Club to do a range of things such as umpire and coach. I said I was interested in coaching and Newham Volunteers got funding for me to do a three-day Level 1 course. Since then, I have worked with NCC every Monday, coaching eight 16-year-olds. Because of my training and experience, I've also been offered a job with Newham Council as a paid sessional coach.

I've definitely learnt new skills. I find it easier to talk to people and I'm more confident. I recently filled in my personal statement on my Ucas university application. I included my volunteering and coaching experience.
