Newly Qualified: Scrutiny makes us stronger

2 mins read Social Care
Slovakian social worker Zuzana Lanikova speaks to Emily Rogers about working in the UK.

Zuzana Lanikova is a child protection social worker in Sheffield Council's children and young people's service. She qualified at the University of Trnava in Slovakia in 2006.

What was your journey from qualifying in Slovakia to starting work in Sheffield?

I came to the UK straight after I qualified, with my English partner.

I could not start doing social work straight away, because I did not have any experience in the UK. So I worked in a call centre in Rotherham for 20 months, while I studied social work legislation and how it worked in England.

In February 2009, I started work as a support worker in Sheffield's children and young people's service, while I was waiting to be registered with the General Social Care Council.
