Newly Qualified: A job with more meaning

2 mins read Social Care
Faye Lucas made the move from casino pit boss to children's social worker.

Faye Lucas is a social worker in Southend-on-Sea Council's children's care management team. She qualified at South Essex College in September last year.

What was your route into this job?

I came into social work totally cold. I was previously in a casino as a pit boss, which means I managed the casino floor. The next step up was management and I realised that wasn't the thing for me and that I'd have to retrain for something.

I came upon social work while looking at GCSE websites and television adverts. I had to do an access course before I could do the degree. It was a massive step, as I hadn't been in education since I was 17. I got a sponsorship from Southend Council in my final year of the course. That made my mind up for me about going into children and families social work and really helped me, because it meant I knew I had a job before I qualified.
