Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM), hosted by NCB, welcomed thislandmark ruling, which could now lead to new rights to flexible workingfor Britain's six million carers.
Christine Lenehan, director of the Council for Disabled Children andboard member for EDCM, said: "This ruling means carers have the sameright to protection against discrimination as disabled peoplethemselves. However, we still need to see greater flexibility fromemployers and more support from government to help parents of disabledchildren into work."
EDCM has previously highlighted the difficulties parents of disabledchildren face in combining work and caring. Only 16 per cent of motherswith disabled children work, compared with 61 per cent of mothersgenerally. In addition to the need for flexible working arrangements, finding affordable and accessible childcare is a real challenge. EDCM iscalling on the government to support parents of disabled children intowork through its current welfare reform proposals.
