NCB Now: Telling the stories of bereaved children

1 min read
World expert on childhood bereavement and trauma Dr Atle Dyregrov will be speaking at Childhood Bereavement: Telling the Story, a conference organised by the Childhood Bereavement Network with 11 Million, the office of the children's commissioner.

Dr Dyregrov will share new thinking and insights from his work during the conference, which will explore the stories children tell about themselves and their experiences, and the stories that help young people understand and express their grief. The conference will hear lessons from research about the stories bereaved children tell about their past, present and future and how careful listening to these stories can improve the support available to them. Among the themes covered is a focus on the specific needs of bereaved Gypsy and Traveller children, an often silenced group, and an exploration of the negative and positive aspects of families' stories being told in the media.

The conference also marks the final public appearance of Sir Al Aynsley-Green before he steps down as children's commissioner, a role in which he has campaigned for bereaved children's right to be heard.
