NCB Now: NCB conference listens to US and UK views on child bereavement support

1 min read
A conference hosted by the Childhood Bereavement Network and NCB on 12 April highlighted US and UK developments in the support of bereaved children and young people.

Speakers at the event included Grace Christ, associate professor of Columbia University, who discussed her work with firefighter families who lost parents in the World Trade Center disaster.

After 9/11 the New York City Fire Department was keen to offer bereaved families a long-term support service and Grace talked about the model of intervention which she implemented. She explained that the model aims to provide support to families in communicating with one another and coping with reminders of the death.

Grace is also researching the reconstitution of the families. Some children who were toddlers on 9/11 showed more signs of grief three years after the event, demonstrating the need for on-going support.
