The group will examine ways in which policies to support parents can help contribute to the fight against child poverty.
The European Council has emphasised that "sustainable family policies have a part to play in improving social cohesion and in sound economic development". The need to support families is gaining momentum in the EU, driven by the twin challenges of child poverty and falling fertility.
Fertility rates in the EU are generally below replacement levels and, in most member states, children are at a greater risk of poverty than the rest of the population. In some countries, one in four children are at risk of living in deprivation.
