NCB Now: Space to explore

At a time when increasing numbers of young children are spending time in organised childcare services and schools, an international award has revealed some of the best examples of spaces designed specifically for their needs.

Bubbletecture Maihara Kindergarten in Japan was the overall winner ofthe award for excellence in architecture and design for children, run byChildren in Scotland with partners.

Five other designs from Colombia, England, Italy, Reunion Island in theIndian Ocean and Scotland were runners up. Details of winning entriesare at www.childreninscotland.org.uk/award. They will be exhibited atthe Making space: architecture and design for young children conferencein Edinburgh this December. The magazine Children in Europe, issueeight, focuses on architecture and design.
