The England-wide training programme is designed to guide, support and stimulate change within their organisational infrastructures in order to help organisations actively involve children and young people in all decision- making processes.
Courses are accessible, free of charge to third sector organisations and range from strategic planning to more practical-based courses, such as offering advice and solutions to common barriers that staff encounter and specific courses for young people around governance.
Strong hierarchical infrastructures within organisations and the attitude of staff can often hinder the active engagement of children and young people from an operational level right up to strategic level. The Building a Culture of Participation course is supported by an in-depth research report that was originally undertaken and published by the National Children's Bureau and PK Research Consultancy, on behalf of the Department for children, Schools and Families. The course addresses the importance of self-evaluation as well as organisational analysis to assess the level of meaningful participation. It also recommends innovative tools and skills, and offers advice on how to overcome barriers to achieve organisational change.
