HIV is a highly stigmatised illness and schools have to understand their responsibilities towards these young people to ensure that they do not face discrimination. Creating a supportive and inclusive environment through policy and practice can make a real difference to the lives of infected and affected children.
For a whole-school approach towards HIV and for "HIV friendly" teaching, learning about HIV needs to be delivered in an accurate, sensitive and inclusive way. Schools need to have an explicit policy framework and staff need support and training in order to feel confident in their ability to help children and young people living with HIV to challenge prejudice and answer questions honestly.
