NCB Now: Safety mentors present at seminar

1 min read
Students from Heartlands Academy in Birmingham addressed delegates from across Europe at the first international seminar looking into young people's involvement in injury prevention.

The three-day seminar, hosted by AdRisk and the Child Safety Education Coalition (CSEC), which is hosted by NCB and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, investigated how young people could enjoy active lives while protecting themselves from the leading cause of death for their age group: unintended injuries.

In between discussions that sought to define high-quality practical safety education, the event gave practical examples of how young people in the UK were already involved in work to prevent road traffic injuries, drowning, poisoning, burns and scalds and trips and falls.

The five Year 10 students outlined a CSEC peer-to-peer project through which they are developing a practical safety education programme, which will culminate in Child Safety Week in June 2010.
