NCB Now: Racial justice for young people

1 min read
"To feel secure, confident, comfortable, content and able to pursue our ambitions as members of society, we need to be valued for ourselves, to feel included, to be respected and treated with dignity and fairness and have a sense of belonging to that society," says Jane Lane, author of Young Children and Racial Justice.

It can be easy to forget that racial equality is not just relevant to adults, yet over 50 years of research indicates that children notice skin colour and other ethnic differences from at least three-years-old. Judgements form at an early age too, as children absorb the attitudes around them. Those opinions can be directed at others, or focused inwards.

Jane Lane, an advocate for racial equality in the early years sector, has written a book on eliminating the impact of racism on young children. Young Children and Racial Justice will be published by NCB and Trentham Books in the summer. The author brings more than 20 years' experience of campaigning and influencing early years policy.
