Online charity YouthNet surveyed 841 16- to 24-year-olds for the report, funded by the Youth in Action Programme and co-ordinated by the British Council. Forty six per cent said racial tension was getting worse, while 67 per cent thought UK immigration laws should be stricter.
However eight in 10 survey respondents said the UK was a multicultural society and 63 per cent said this made the UK a better place. Seven in 10 have friends from different countries or ethnic backgrounds.
Fiona Dawe, chief executive of YouthNet, said: "In this report, young people's views on Europe - and on race, immigration and multiculturalism in the UK today - make interesting and encouraging reading. For the most part they feel optimistic and open minded about the UK's multicultural society and the possibilities for the future of the UK's relationship with Europe."
