Published in 1998 by NCB and Save the Children, the report draws on a consultation project carried out by authors Carolyne Willow and Tina Hyder, who talked to 75 five- to seven-year-olds.
Most of the children who were consulted described a smack as a hard or very hard hit. As one seven-year-old girl put it, "it really hurts, it stings you and makes you horrible inside."
