The NIFTY evaluation project - Neat, Informative, Feasible, Timely and Yours - was developed with seven local authorities to help them undertake do-it-yourself evaluation of their childcare services.
The principles behind NIFTY, along with the experiences of those involved in the project, have now been published in a pocket-sized handbook, NIFTY evaluation: an introductory handbook for social care staff, written by principal research officer Catherine Shaw, who leads NCB's evaluation team.
"Evaluation can sometimes be a daunting prospect," she said. "We hope the book will help front-line social workers to feel more confident about the process."
A second handbook will be published in 2005 following the next phase of the project.
