NCB NOW: Care leavers could suffer if funds pulled

1 min read
A new study, published by NCB, has found that local authorities are responding to the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 by providing more services that meet the diverse needs of care leavers.

The study draws on an innovative research and development partnership involving eight London boroughs. NCB's Research Department carried out monitoring and evaluation of the impact of the Act within the boroughs, while the Children's Residential Care Unit supported them in the development of services through training and other practice work.

The report, Implementing the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000, by Nadeem Hai and Alison Williams, found that all eight boroughs had developed services which, in the long term, should improve the life chances of young people leaving care.

However, there is concern about the removal of ring-fenced funding for care leavers.

"Thanks to ring-fencing, local authorities have been able to put resources in place," said Williams. "But those resources could now be eroded by competing demands on councils' purse strings." - Implementing the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 is available from NCB Book Sales on 020 7843 6029 or www.ncb.org.uk.
