FUNDING: Care-leaver services face downgrading

The research, carried out in the two years after the introduction of the Children (Leaving Care) Act, found that the eight London boroughs in the study had developed services to boost the long-term situations for young people leaving care.

Things have got better for care-leavers since the introduction of the Act, said Alison Williams, a principal officer at NCB and co-author of the report. "Placements and housing are more suitable, there is evidence that healthcare is improving, and young people themselves say their circumstances have improved," she added.

But the report reveals concern among social services directors and leaving-care teams about the removal of ring-fenced funding for these services.
