NCB NOW: NCB targets school governors for SRE

The Sex Education Forum, based at NCB, has produced a pack of guidance and training activities to help school governors contribute to sex and relationships education (SRE) policy and delivery.

Developing sex and relationships education in schools: guidance and training activities for school governors includes a 17-minute video as well as two factsheets: one providing answers to some of the questions frequently asked by governors, and the other to support work with parents.

School governors have a statutory responsibility for SRE in their schools.

They must ensure that parents, pupils and staff work together to develop a policy which meets students' needs, reflects the school's individual ethos and takes on board local sexual health concerns.

Commenting on the new pack, schools minister Stephen Twigg said: "Effective SRE is essential for young people to make responsible and well informed decisions about their life. I am sure this pack will be a great help to school governors both in fulfilling their statutory responsibilities and in supporting schools in the delivery of SRE."
