NCB Now: National Gallery opens its doors

The National Gallery has been collaborating with NCB through the Life Routes project to use creative arts to address the five key outcomes set out in Every Child Matters: being healthy; staying safe; enjoying and achieving; making a positive contribution; and economic wellbeing.

Working with the Festival of Youth Arts and other key partners, theNational Gallery hosted a week of creative activities aimed at engagingteenagers with their collection. Through collaboration with professionaldancers, young people involved in the Life Routes project took part in aseries of dance workshops to create an original piece, inspired by thegallery's collection. A celebratory youth arts party on the evening ofFriday 2 June 2006 at the National Gallery showcased the young people'sperformance. For the first time in its history, the whole Gallery wasopen to and focused on the needs and achievements of young people.

Life Routes is part of a global youth development initiative by Nokiaand the International Youth Foundation, and is implemented in the UK byNCB. It helps young people to develop skills such as the ability to setand achieve goals, make informed choices, solve problems and exercisegood judgment.
