The impact of binge drinking in the UK has been a popular media subject for some years. However, awareness of the full consequences of alcohol intake by pregnant women on the foetus is less widespread. In the UK, it is estimated that more than 7,000 children are born each year with lifelong incurable problems caused by maternal drinking during pregnancy. Foetally affected children are some of the most vulnerable in our society - if not recognised and supported, they face a traumatic path through adolescence and beyond.
As a children's charity concerned with children in care, The Adolescent and Children's Trust (Tact), is committed to raising awareness of this growing problem. Tact's Foetally Affected Children's Service (FACS) service will help develop understanding of the conditions involved and the strategies that can assist treatment. FACS will offer a range of support to foster carers, adopters and other professionals working within the care system.
