NCB Now: Member Focus - The Caspari Foundation, Islington, London

Our best practice "We are providing a service to children and adolescents whose learning is affected by emotional, social and behavioural factors. Reading and writing, because of their symbolic nature, are often the chosen arena for the expression of emotional conflict. Teachers with specialist training in educational therapy work individually with children helping them to explore the links between unconscious anxieties and the learning problem, and to try new approaches to learning tasks.

"Exploring feelings through metaphors in stories and creative activities particularly suits children considered too fragile for psychotherapy. Educational therapists also consult with parents and schools who may be struggling to help children. We offer an MA course and a shorter certificate course for those wishing to enhance their skills. Tailored courses for learning mentors, teaching assistants and workers with looked after children are also available."
