NCB Now: Member focus - Oldham Council - Our best practice Rovingreporters

In Oldham, we wanted to find out more about the needs of young people in our area and how services can be better developed and delivered to young people. As a result, we trained a group of young people to become roving reporters to help us find out. We taught them interview techniques and how to use video cameras and sent them out to interview nearly 400 children and young people aged between 5-19 years.

At the project celebration event, hosted by our roving reporters andattended by 200 service deliverers in Oldham, the young people askeddelegates to think about their recommendations and to develop ideasabout how their service could help meet them. They then asked delegatesto write a pledge to the children and young people of Oldham, as to whattheir service will do to meet their needs, who will be responsible andwhen it will be completed.

We are now working with young people to set up an inspection unit tofollow up on these pledges, to find out if the work is being done andhow well.
