NCB Now: Journal examines parenting support

The latest issue of Children & Society, the international journal published for NCB by John Wiley & Sons, examines the topical issue of parenting and the effectiveness of support given to parents.

Parenting is an area currently receiving widespread media attention.Earlier this month Tony Blair argued that bad parenting is not just aprivate matter for families and that the state should interveneearlier.

Research attention has also been stimulated by policy initiatives suchas Every Child Matters as well as national programmes like SureStart.

The national telephone helpline - Parentline Plus - is the focus of thejournal's first article by Janet Boddy, Marjorie Smith and Antonia Simonfrom the Thomas Coram Research Unit at the University of London.

The article analyses the efficiency and effectiveness of the service andasks whether it achieves its purpose as a universal support service forparents.
