NCB Now: Need to understand prevention services

1 min read
A special issue of Children & Society, NCB's multidisciplinary journal published by John Wiley & Sons, examines current understanding of early intervention and prevention services for children and young people.

This is a core area of policy-making interest, with the 2004 Children Act stating that each local authority area must place an emphasis on prevention and achieving integrated support.

Guest edited by Alan France, University of Sheffield, and David Utting, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, this issue brings together seven papers, highlighting examples of community-based initiatives.

A contribution from the Netherlands provides an overview of a strategy that aims to attack problem behaviour of young people in deprived areas.

Another paper examines Pathways to Prevention, a developmental project focused on the transition to school in a disadvantaged, multicultural area of Queensland, Australia.

The lessons from these papers will help policy-makers and practitioners to undertake and deliver stronger evidence-based approaches to prevention.
