NCB Now: Guide to complex needs inclusion

A new guide launched by the Health Needs in Education consortium gives practical advice to help children with complex health needs have full access to education.

Including Me is a companion to Managing Medicines in Schools and EarlyYears Settings, produced by the Department for Education and Skillsearlier this year.

The consortium, which includes the NCB-based Council for DisabledChildren, Mencap, the DfES and the Royal College of Nursing, launchedits guide on 22 November in London.

Written by Jeanne Carlin, the guide aims to prevent children withdisabilities being excluded from schools because of their health needs.It shows how settings can support children by developing policies andimplementing effective management systems.

Sally Creighton, featured on the guide's front cover, is a six-year-oldwith complex medical needs due to a rare genetic condition. She attendsa special school, which, despite having no full time on-site nursing,has been able to support her well.
