NCB Now: Guide on drugs and alcohol released

Young people in care are more susceptible to risk factors that can contribute to a dependency on alcohol and other drugs.

A new guide published by the National Children's Bureau and the DrugEducation Forum provides advice to professionals on how to develop aneducation programme to combat these factors and meet the needs of theyoung people in their care.

Talking about Alcohol and other Drugs is an in-depth guide for a rangeof professionals including social workers, foster carers, managers ofresidential care homes and young people in public care services. It aimsto inspire and support professionals to develop a consistent approach totalking about alcohol and other drugs, through developing and reviewingdrug education policy and practice and management of drug relatedincidents among young people.

Co-author Jo Butcher, principle officer, children's development, said:"This guide has been developed to support care providers, helping themtalk and listen more freely to the young people in their care. Byimproving communications about alcohol and other drugs, we can helpreduce the risks which young people in public care face."
