NCB Now: Exploring the NHS Constitution

In June, NCB's VSS programme held a consultation workshop to explore the relevance of the NHS Constitution for young people. A group of 14 young people considered the key messages of the paper, developed proposals for its promotion and generated feedback for the Department of Health.

Surprisingly, nobody knew what the consitution contained, even though many of them are actively engaged in health groups and have regular contact with the NHS. Nevertheless, the group felt positive about it and thought its proposals would empower them as patients and improve their relationships with health professionals.

The group discussed the principles, rights, responsibilities and values in the constitution and agreed that the important issues included: getting information about treatment, having access to medical records and being included in decisions that affect them.
