NCB Now: Event highlights young carers' needs

1 min read
The achievements of young carers in Enfield were celebrated at an event held at Tottenham Hotspur football ground on 16 June to highlight the needs of this group of young people.

During the event, which was organised by Dazu's Young Carers project, Janine Shaw, head of NCB's children and young people's participation unit, spoke about simple measures which professionals can take to support young carers.

Talking about her experience of working with young carers, Janine highlighted priority measures they had identified such as better long term funding for projects and access to a phone at school in case of emergencies. She explained that while young carers want people to be aware of their situation they don't want to be treated differently.

She also stressed the need to improve consultation with the whole family in order to reduce the impact of disability or illness on children and family life.
