NCB Now: Comment - Will big business trump children's health?

Concern over public health has soared in the past year, amid growing evidence of the threats the population faces.

Last month, for example, a report emerged emphasising the dangers of passive smoking, while on 23 November delegates at an NCB conference will consider European evidence of the pervasive impact of obesity on children in what some are calling an epidemic.

The white paper on public health sets out the Government's plans for addressing such problems. There seems to be an overwhelming argument for measures to protect children and young people from poor health: ban smoking in public places, control advertising aimed at children and improve food and drink labelling so parents can make informed choices.

Unfortunately, it is not so simple. We must not underestimate the political pressures surrounding the issue of health promotion.
