Where the health of children and young people is concerned, smoking is an especially critical issue. More than 80 per cent of smokers began their habit when they were children. What's more, the longer a person has smoked, the harder they find it to quit the habit.
According to a 2002 DoH report, 84 per cent of school pupils who had been regular smokers for more than a year said they would find it difficult to give up, against 57 per cent of those who had smoked for a year or less.
It is hardly rocket science to deduce from these statistics that the best way of stopping smoking is not to start in the first place. But what can we do to prevent young people taking up the habit?
