1 min read
Any white paper which looks at community health services is honour bound to address the needs of disabled children and their families. So what does Our Health, Our Care, Our Say, published by the Government last week, give us?

At present, services for disabled children are often patchy andunco-ordinated, with many families feeling their needs are ignored. Twoyears ago, the National Service Framework for Children, Young People andMaternity Services laid out an ambitious vision: a 10-year strategy toprovide disabled children and their families with consistent,high-quality services from the moment parents are told their child isdisabled, through to the transition to adulthood.

This latest white paper contains a further welcome commitment to thenational service framework standards and the recommendations in thereport from the Prime Minister's strategy unit, Improving the LifeChances of Disabled People. It also recognises the importance of a leadprofessional to co-ordinate services for children as described in EveryChild Matters: Change for Children. These are all important assertionsfor disabled children.
