NCB Now: Comment - Unlikely champion who fought for children's rights

The passage of the Children Bill through Parliament has naturally seen intense lobbying activity across the children's sector as a whole.

There have been some disappointments - for example, the lack of real power for the new children's commissioner - but also some successes, where the Government has listened to our concerns.

One such success is an amendment on which the Children's Rights Alliance for England and The Children's Society have been leading. The Government has agreed to amend the 1989 Children Act to ensure that local authorities seek and record children's wishes and feelings in all child protection investigations.

This clause has a particular and poignant relevance given the origins of the Children Bill. The Laming report, prompted by the death of Victoria Climbie, was a key driver behind the Bill. One of the most tragic aspects of Victoria's case is that none of the string of professionals whom she encountered in this country spoke directly to her to ascertain her wishes and feelings.
