NCB Now: Comment - Time to build on the high profile of SRE

1 min read
While we await the coalition's views on sex and relationships education (SRE), we should not let the momentum towards change subside. Expectations of parents, faith groups, professionals, the media and young people themselves have been raised and support for SRE is stronger than ever.

The Sex Education Forum continues to lobby to keep SRE at the top of the national policy agenda but it will be a lost opportunity if local providers, local authorities and primary care trusts do not make the most of this higher profile for SRE.

Understanding the nature and extent of current provision of SRE is the foundation for strategic planning for future improvements. Local services can work with schools and other providers to identify where limited resources can have the greatest impact.

The Home Office Review of Sexualisation reminds us of how important it is that children and young people have access to positive messages on sexuality to balance the often extreme messages presented in the media. Children have the right to be safe and healthy, and this should be a priority for us all.
