NCB Now: Comment - There are reasons to celebrate the new year

1 min read
As a new year starts, what can we expect for children's services from the Government? There are three reasons why I am feeling confident for the year ahead.

First, I have great hopes for the Comprehensive Spending Review in thesummer, when we will learn how government funds will be spent after2008.

Yes, we all know that there will be less growth in public expenditurethan previously. But I do think that Gordon Brown's long-term commitmentto children will be reflected in his decisions. The commitment to rollout Every Child Matters now runs deep, and he will not turn the tap offtoo early. Disabled children may be the main beneficiaries - I suspectthe hoped-for extra funding for youth services might be harder to find -but joined-up services for children should still continue to be able togrow.
