NCB Now: Comment - Clarity needed on disabled children funds

During 2010 to 2011, local authorities have received the majority of Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC) funding for short breaks. This equates to a total national funding pot of 178m.

However, recent research by Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) demonstrates that in some areas, short breaks services are being shut down because budget holders assume that this funding will not be sustained in the 2010 Spending Review.

On 14 September, EDCM published Close to Crisis - Frontline Service Cuts for Disabled Children, a report that highlights the impact of local service funding cuts on families with disabled children. This report was based on messages from EDCM supporters about cuts to local services for disabled children. One parent said: "to lose this service would just mean another blow for us in coping with the stress that families deal with on a day-to-day basis."
