NCB NOW: Comment - BBC's care season can help change attitudes

1 min read
"The public think that most people in care are bad people who've done something wrong, which is so not true. Most of the time it's circumstances you can't help."

This comment from Edith, 17, illustrates the misconceptions many people have about the care system. All too often children in public care are seen either as troublemakers or as victims - stigmas that exacerbate the problems they already face in their young lives.

Inevitably, perhaps, these stereotypes are reinforced by the media. It is the negative stories of scandal and failure that hit the headlines, not the day-to-day stories of young people succeeding despite their difficulties. Good news, it seems, is no news.

That is why the current BBC season on children in care is such a welcome initiative. The season, Taking Care, which runs until 29 February across television and radio channels, aims to increase understanding and challenge perceptions of care.
