NCB Now: Children in Scotland's year of the arts

Children in Scotland will be taking the lead on the arts with a major international programme throughout 2008.

The programme, Picture this ... Young Children and the Arts, will belaunched in March with the latest issue of Children in Europe. Publishedin 12 languages across 14 countries, it examines how the arts are usedin learning, communication, social and emotional development and inpromoting inclusion.

The programme also includes an event at the Edinburgh International BookFestival and a children's art competition across Scotland and partnercountries. It culminates in December with a major international two-dayconference. This explores the influence of children in determining artsactivities and the education of those providing them.

Bronwen Cohen, chief executive of Children in Scotland, said: "Throughthe contribution of the arts workforce in Scotland and across Europe,the arts can play a crucial role in social inclusion and bringinggenerations together."

Joan Parr, head of education at the Scottish Arts Council who issupporting the programme, adds: "We look forward to working withChildren in Scotland to create a forum for international debate andsharing of best practice in the crucially important area of artsprovision for young people."
