NCB Now: Changes to health and education

Celine McStravick, director of NCB NI, has said new health and education structures in Northern Ireland could improve outcomes for children.

As of April 2009, Northern Ireland has made sweeping changes to the way it delivers public services (see box). Furthermore, in 2010 the structure of the education system is set to change with the existing five Education and Library Boards being replaced by one Education and Skills Authority.

The changes follow the Review of Public Administration launched by the Northern Ireland Executive in June 2002 and, after years of consultation and information gathering, changes are now afoot.

McStravick said: "It is sometimes hard to believe we have reached such a momentous stage in public sector development. The public sector landscape had become top-heavy, bureaucratic and not-fit-for-purpose, not to mention expensive.
