NCB Now: Caring for looked-after young people

1 min read
The Children and Young Persons Bill puts into legislation, proposals set out in Care Matters.

NCB's work on the Bill is based around looked-after children and the welfare/justice divide, an NCB policy priority.

Work focuses on three key issues: the experiences of looked-after children who go into custody; health assessments, planning and promotion; and how to ensure local authorities develop a range of accommodation for looked-after children in the area.

Zoe Renton, policy officer at NCB, said: "We have worked successfully with other organisations in the children's sector. We wanted to ensure that measures in the Bill would lead to better continuity of care for looked-after children who spend a period of time in a young offender institution or secure training centre. In response to Peers who raised our concerns, the Minister, Lord Adonis, committed to using secondary legislation to address effective joint working between children's services and youth offending teams (YOTs)."
