NCB Now: Comment - School stability is vital for looked-after children

1 min read
School plays a vital part in the lives of all children, but for young people in public care its role is especially critical.

It is not only a question of educational attainment, important though this is. For many looked-after children, school offers a pathway to developing resilience. Stability within school helps to preserve care placements, while exclusion or the lack of a school place can contribute directly to placements breaking down, with all the disruption and distress that ensue.

What many looked-after children need are schools with clear boundaries and high expectations of behaviour and performance. They also need schools that can encourage confidence and enable damaged self-esteem to be mended.

The problem is that these are, by definition, likely to be the most successful schools in the area. They will have good Ofsted reports as well as impressive academic results - and they will have a competitive throng of parents wanting places for their children.
