NCB Now: ABA works to tackle bullying in the community

1 min read
In recent years, ABA has become increasingly aware of how bullying in the wider community can impact on the wellbeing of children and young people and have serious long-term consequences.

As well as undermining their educational attainment, their self-esteem and sense of security can be damaged. When bullying takes place out of school, children and young people may feel isolated or confused about who to turn to for help and advice.

Bullying is a community safety issue. A recent study by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation showed that badly bullied young people are three times more likely than their peers to say "I hardly ever feel safe in my neighbourhood". The fear of bullying can prevent children from taking full advantage of the facilities and opportunities available in their local area. Effective anti-bullying practice upholds the right of all children to feel safe wherever they learn, play and socialise.
