The Tree project aims to actively engage 8,600 10- to 18-year-olds to take action on their concerns and issues. Young people with disabilities will have more social opportunities to interact with their peers and 130 young people will develop communication, committee and project management skills by becoming more active in the democratic and decision making structures of the organisation.
Some 2,000 young people will benefit through the development of five new supported volunteering roles as quality champions, young trainers, mentors, campaigners and local action group members. Overall youth participation will increase through collecting and sharing experience among member groups.
Other partners in the project are the Co-operative College and the National Deaf Children's Society.
One of the first areas the programme will concentrate on is working to change people's perception of refugees and asylum seekers and promoting children's rights for asylum seeking children.
Ideas suggested for campaigning activity include a week of action with different local and national events, involving refugee groups, setting up a website and mapping local refugee groups.
